B12 Injections are a popular subject. If you’re looking for information about what a B12 injection is, check out our FAQ on B12 shots blog post we wrote last year.
In this article, we’re going to dive a little deeper and answer some of the more, shall we say “pointed”, questions when it comes to B12 shots.
Are B12 shots very effective?
Vitamin B12 shots are the most common way to prevent or treat a deficiency. The injections are prescribed by a doctor and given intramuscularly, or into muscle.
Injections are usually given as hydroxocobalamin or methylcobalamin. These are very effective at raising blood levels of B12 and preventing/reversing a deficiency.
How long does a B12 shot last?
The lasting effects of a vitamin B12 injection depends on a number of factors, such as a person’s metabolism and how often the injections are administered. In general, the effects of vitamin B12 injections can last about one week.
How often should you get a B12 shot?
Maintenance doses of B12 vary from person to person. The usual frequency for intramuscular doses of B12 shots is between 10 to 30 days.
What are the side effects of B12 injections?
A reaction to an Injectable vitamin B-12 is rare. If you notice any adverse effects after you start taking vitamin B-12 shots you should seek medical attention from your doctor. For a full list of possible adverse effects, you can go here.
Do B12 shots work for weight loss?
Unfortunately there isn’t any solid evidence that vitamin B-12 injections aid in weight loss.
Some weight-loss clinics offer vitamin B-12 injections as part of their weight-loss programs. Proponents of vitamin B-12 injections say the shots give you more energy and boost your metabolism, helping you shed unwanted pounds. But unless you have a vitamin B-12 deficiency, injections are not likely to give you an energy boost.
Vitamin B-12 is a water-soluble B complex vitamin found naturally in a variety of foods, including meat, fish and dairy products.
Can B12 shots boost my energy levels?
The human body does not naturally produce Vitamin B12, however your body needs it to produce an adequate amount of healthy red blood cells in the bone marrow. Vitamin B12 is available only in animal foods (meat and dairy products) or yeast extracts such as brewer’s yeast.
If your body is Vitamin B12 deficient, it can result in anemia. Anemia is a condition in which you lack healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your body’s tissues. This can make your body feel tired and weak.
After receiving a B12 shot, this will help restore the needed red blood cell count to your body, which in turn will give your body more energy because your body’s tissues are getting adequate oxygen.
